A/C Maintenance in Bridgetown, Ohio

No one wants to experience an air conditioning problem when summer hits here in Southwest Ohio. And yet so few homeowners do what needs to be done to prevent them from happening in the first place. Throughout the years, HVAC systems are put through a lot. They work hard around the clock. Sooner or later, the harsh summer heat and humidity take a toll on how an A/C unit or heat pump functions and how long the HVAC equipment lasts. Over time, homeowners typically experience increases in air conditioning costs as their air conditioner becomes less and less efficient. Soon or later, breakdowns and repairs become a more common occurrence. Sooner or later, they end up having to replace the air conditioner or heat pump completely and this is when the price of maintenance pales in comparison.

OUR TIPS!

4 Air Conditioning Efficiency Tips

Americans spend more on cooling than all the other countries in the world combined. With already high air conditioning bills ever-increasing in the U.S., it’s now more essential than ever for customers to utilize energy-saving options to help optimize their home cooling equipment or heat pump equipment, and lower residential air conditioning costs without compromising home comfort. Because of Southwestern Ohio’s weather, air conditioning is crucial for overall comfort, rest and relaxation during our hot and humid summer months. Nevertheless, this doesn’t mean it should cost an arm and a leg to stay that way. If you’re looking for relief from high home cooling bills during the summer, our air conditioning efficiency experts offer the following tips:

REGULARLY CHANGE AIR FILTERS

Air conditioners always need proper airflow to operate efficiently. With this in mind, it is always extremely important to check your air filters periodically during the summer when you’re using your home cooling system. Air filters tend to accumulate dust and dirt in a short period of time and become obstructed. This obstruction tends to hinder airflow and only gets worse. Ideally, you should be checking your air filters monthly all summer long. Clean them or replace them as often as necessary. Doing so can decrease home cooling costs by 5 to 15 percent.

UTILIZE ALL FANS & VENTILATION

Taking advantage of all the ventilation in your home in addition to any fans you can use is another effective way to make sure your home feels cooler during the summer while lowering air conditioning costs. Although a fan alone won’t sufficiently replace your home cooling system completely during especially hot times, fans always at least help make it feel more reasonable. Fans keep air flowing, which makes it feel cooler because the air is moving. They work nicely alone when it’s not too hot and humid outside. Ideally, you want to locate them close to doors and windows, or inside windows. Try creating breezeways if possible.

AIR VENT AND AIR DUCT MAINTENANCE

Make sure your ductwork is properly insulated and sealed properly. Insulation is essential for any ductwork traveling through the attic or any other areas that aren’t kept cool. Likewise, it’s always a good idea to personally inspect for leaks in the ductwork to ensure they haven’t developed any air leaks, gaps or holes. If you find air leaks in your air duct system, duct tape can usually be used to seal it off temporarily. This is usually the type of repair you can do on your own without an HVAC specialist. However, sooner or later, air leaks need to be examined by a home comfort professional. They can do this during a routine maintenance call.

USE OF APPLIANCES SPARINGLY

Cutting back on the use of appliances that create heat in the home can reduce air conditioning costs. This includes large lamps, stoves, irons, ovens and certain electronics. If possible, try cooking outdoors or on a patio. It cuts down on the heat generated within your house or building space while the A/C is working to cool the place down. Additionally, keep these same heat-generating appliances away from the home’s thermostat. Otherwise, the heat they give off can mess with the thermostat’s reading and make the system work harder to cool the house. This causes it to use more energy when it is cooler than what the thermostat says.

Heat Pumps

What is a Heat Pump?

Heat pumps are heating and air conditioning units that get installed outside the residence. Although they look a lot like a central air conditioning unit, heat pumps offer heating in addition to air conditioning. During the winter, a heat pump will usually work with an air handler. Bridgetown Heating & Cooling welcomes homeowners as well as area business owners to improve their indoor comfort levels while lowering their heating and air conditioning costs by installing a heat pump. This single, year-round HVAC system is better for the environment. They require little maintenance. They are quieter and lighter on energy consumption.

General A/C FAQ

What should be considered an HVAC emergency?

At Bridgetown Heating & Cooling, emergency calls concerning home comfort are always our highest priority. If you ever have a sudden A/C breakdown during the summer, we consider it an emergency. This is also true if you’ve lost cooling (or heat for that matter) and there are elderly people or kids in the home or building. Boiler leaks, as well as pipe bursts, are considered HVAC emergencies. Not to mention gas leaks. For gas leaks, you should always evacuate the home or building immediately and then call 911. Because our emergency HVAC technicians know that emergency situations are different for every customer, we always strive to listen closely when you call to understand your needs. We also provide helpful information on how to stay safe while waiting for our team to arrive.

What types of air conditioners are available?

Homeowners can choose from several different types of residential air conditioning units with high-efficiency ratings when they choose Bridgetown Heating & Cooling. Although the most common types are centralized air conditioning units, we also offer ductless air conditioning and zoned air conditioning. Another great option would be a heat pump. The standard centralized air conditioning system usually includes an outdoor unit and an indoor unit that works with the heating system’s equipment. Ductless air conditioners or mini-splits consist of an outdoor heat pump that connects to the air handler in the home. Zoned air conditioners are ideal to cool specific rooms.

How does my AC system work?

When an air conditioner functions properly, like they’re designed to run, they operate in cycles. Once the system’s thermostat reads the increase in temperature and it’s warmer than your desired level, the cycle starts. Then, as soon as it detects the rise in temperature, the unit comes on and pulls warm air into the unit over the evaporator coils. Using AC refrigerants inside the unit’s compressor, these coils absorb the heat in the air, cooling it down while removing moisture. During the cooling cycle, the heat is released outdoors through the A/C’s fans and the cooled air goes into the home. Eventually, the cooled refrigerant goes back to the indoor unit where the process is repeated until it achieves the desired temperature level.
